Gas prices have been the highest they have ever been in Chicago and the U.S., according to xxxxx. Although gas prices have gone up and down throughout history, they have skyrocketed in the past several months.
Gas prices were at a low in January 2002 at $1.09 per gallon. From there, gas prices steadily crept up to about $4 a gallon until they dipped in December 2008 (around $2). A steady increase in gas prices started again in November 2021, at $2.20, and increases continued from there.
As of June 6, gas prices reached $6 a gallon for regular unleaded in the city. Gas prices fluctuate as a result of the rising crude oil prices.
