After President Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, many worried about what that meant for women and women’s health. Trump has said on many occasions that he as well as the Republican party have set their sites on addressing how women’s healthcare should look like in the United States. He is even quoted to have said that he will protect women “whether they like it or not”.
Many women have not only seen his victory as dangerous to the political landscape of America but also harmful to women’s healthcare, especially abortion. Abortion has been more on people’s minds since Trump appointed Supreme Court justices to make the court a Republican majority. After the court ruled that they would overturn Roe v. Wade, it left many women in moderate and Republicans feeling vulnerable to losing their ability to make decisions about their own bodies.
The map above shows each state’s abortion laws. It illustrates that many women in moderate and Republican states have less time to receive an abortion or are strictly banned from receiving one at all.
Red states such as Texas, have banned doctors from receiving an abortion unless it is medically necessary. These bans have been controversial due to several cases of women living in states that have bans on abortions being traumatized or even dying painful deaths because they couldn’t receive the care they truly needed.
