Over the last five years, male arrests in Illinois were highest among adults in their late 20s and 30s, with the largest total coming from men ages 30 to 34, according to an analysis of an FBI dataset.

The 30-to-34 age group recorded 91,023 arrests, followed closely by the 25-to-29 age group, with 88,882 arrests, according to the FBI Crime Data Explorer. After that point, totals decrease across older age brackets and among ages less than 24. The trend suggests that male arrests in Illinois are most concentrated during early and middle adulthood, rather than among late teens or older adults.

The drop-off after age 40 is also significant. Arrests fall from 60,385 among men ages 40 to 44 to 42,259 among ages 45 to 49, signifying a 30% decrease in the arrest rate.

Younger adult categories show a different pattern. Single-year ages from 18 to 24 range from 14,104 to 17,063 arrests, which are notable but still far below the broader 25-to-29 and 30-to-34 categories. This suggests that arrests rise after the teenage years and continue increasing into early adulthood before reaching their peak.

Overall, the data show a bell-shaped pattern: arrests build from age 18, reach their highest point between ages 25 and 34, and then decline steadily with age. The numbers point to late young adulthood and early middle age as the period when Illinois males have the most reported arrest contact with law enforcement.
