The 2024 Cook County State’s Attorney race is heating up to be one of the highly contested races in the city next week, with Democrat Eileen O’Neill Burke and Republican Robert ‘Bob’ Fioretti both gearing up to replace Kim Foxx, who is not seeking reelection.
O’Neill Burke, a retired appellate court judge, is focused on a balanced approach to justice in Chicago. One of her main priorities in office would be reducing gun violence by prosecuting violent criminals, also supporting community-based programs that address the root of violent crimes in Chicago. She also pledges to make the office more transparent and open to the public.
On the other side of the ticket, Fioretti is a former Chicago city alderman and stands on a traditional conservative “law-and-order” approach to this position. He promises a tough-on-crime approach with stricter sentencing and prosecution of crime in the city. He also lists one of his main priorities as increasing support and resources of Chicago police that he believes will lead to safer neighborhoods.
As Chicago voters consider these different approaches on crime at the ballot box, the outcome of this race could change Cook County’s approach to public safety and its justice system. — Bradley Gambosi
Analysis: Candidate Stances and How They Are Being Searched
With the election a few days away, Cook County State’s Attorney candidates Eileen O’Neill Burke and Bob Fioretti offer voters two contrasting approaches to law and justice reform.

On the other hand, Fioretti, the Republican candidate and former Chicago alderman, has voiced strong opposition to cash bail elimination and advocates a more traditional, enforcement-focused approach to crime. His campaign emphasizes cracking down on violent crime, collaborating with federal immigration enforcement for non-citizens involved in violent acts, and enhancing the investigative power of the state attorney’s office to curb political corruption. Fioretti has positioned himself as a candidate aiming to “restore law and order” and distance the office from what he describes as lenient policies toward offenders. — Ashley Jacobsen
