The first few months of 2020 saw the arrival of COVID-19 to the United States, a global pandemic that drastically altered the country’s way of life in ways it still feels today. Just over five years later, it’s hard to remember what life in the U.S. was like before COVID-19 was everywhere; when it was a new, mysterious contagion only a few hundred people had contracted in America.
The above map shows the total number of recorded cases by state as of March 15, 2020. While most states had less than 100 each at the time, California, New York, and Washington led the charge with 282, 421, and 568 cases, respectively.
While most of the nation was panicking in apprehension of the unknown horrors the virus might have brought, these three states were getting slammed, putting their hospitals and medical workers to the test.
EverGreen Health — a hospital in Kirkland, Washington — made history on February 28, 2020 when it identified the country’s first fatal case of COVID-19. Just weeks later, they reached capacity of their critical care wards; a testament to the unprecedented speed and ferocity of this virus.
