Rising Concerns Over Federal Pay and Government Stability
According to an analysis of Google search data, interest in U.S. government developments has raised in recent months, reflecting growing public concern.
Terms like “federal work pay” and “government services closed” saw a surge that was caused due to budget negotiations and threats of shutting down in Washington D.C.
The chart above shows the increase of search interest regarding this particular concern within the United States in early and mid 2025, with most noted spikes during debates continuing resolutions and workers being laid off.
This pattern demonstrates the public’s growing concern over the government’s stability and pay increases whenever shutdowns emerge.
The blue which indicates the federal pay , steadily remains higher to that of searches regarding government services closed . This suggests that the public is more concerned about the financial impacts instead of the services that are available.

The Government Shutdown vs SNAP

Over the past month, the US government has shut down due to a budget standoff between the Republicans and Democrats, according to the BBC.
In the US, Congress must agree upon a budget and then send it to the president for it to be signed into law. When they can’t agree prior to the deadline, then the government shuts down. As of right now, the government has been shut down for almost a month with no sign of reopening. This has caused so much worry and confusion for many Americans.
One of the main causes of concern for many Americans include the future of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is a government program used to assist low-income people with food. This program is currently used by more than 40 million Americans.
With the current government shutdown, there are talks about defunding the program starting in November. According to the US Department of Agriculture, they will “allow funds to run dry in November, arguing the money may be needed for emergencies, such as natural disasters,” according to a BBC article. And instead of trying to come up with a better outcome both Republicans and Democrats have been claiming the opposite side is to blame for the shutdown and the halt of SNAP.
So far, there still hasn’t been any progress in terms of reopening the government or any other effects it has on the American people. This has spiked Google searches for both as people wait for updates regarding both situations. — Alejandra Jimenez
Search on Pritzker, Abbott as Texas National Guard Arrives in Chicago
The Illinois and Texas governors have made bold statements on the Trump administration’s immigration tactics, causing increased interest ahead of election season, and ChatGPT’s inconsistent search interest contributes to concerns about the AI bubble bursting.
According to an analysis of Google search data following the start of The Department of Homeland Security’s Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago, search interest for the Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has spiked considerably. Pritzker has been very vocal about his opposition to the presence of federal agents in the city of Chicago, making numerous public appearances and accusing the Trump administration of heightening tensions to further their goals.
Following protests against ICE’s presence in Chicago, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has mobilized the Texas National Guard to be deployed in Chicago. According to an analysis of Google search data, Abbott’s search queries are fewer than Governor Pritzker’s by a significant margin, however spikes can be seen, such as on Oct. 9 when Abbott sent the National Guard to Chicago despite a court order blocking their deployment.
While it is impossible to tell from the number of searches alone whether the increased attention on both governors will reflect positively or negatively, it is important since both Illinois and Texas will hold a gubernatorial election in 2026. Both Pritzker and Abbott have made bold stances on the issue of immigration and the Trump Administration’s approach, which will cause potential voters to either pledge their support or staunchly oppose their reelection.
