In 2021, the United States saw an increase of 8% from gun-related deaths from 2020 . There were a total of 48,830 gun-related deaths in the United States in 2021.
Many people in the United States would say that the country is facing a problem when it comes to gun control. The amount of mass shootings that happen in the United States is proportionally larger compared to other countries.
However, it might surprise some people that the biggest percentage of gun-related deaths is suicide. Accounting for 54% of the deaths related to firearms, suicides lead compared to 43% being homicides.
The state with the highest death rate due to firearms is Mississippi with a death rate of 33.9 per 100,000 total population. The cause of this high firearm mortality rate might be due to the fact that the state has weaker gun laws compared to that of other states.
Mississippi data has shown that 50.9% of all households own at least one gun, which is in the top 10 states with the highest rates of gun ownership.
Massachusetts has the lowest death rate due to firearms at 3.4 per 100,000 total population. Massachusetts is also in the bottom 10 states in gun ownership rate at 9.9%.
The data show that there is a correlation between high firearm mortality rate between states with higher gun ownership compared to that of lower gun ownership households.
